Four vertical space panels side by side: a glowing blue futuristic city skyline beneath a huge planet with light streaks racing forward; a cream and tan ringed Saturn in a blue star field; the Milky Way rising over a dark pine-lined valley; and the Milky Way over jagged mountain peaks with an orange horizon above a sea of fog

Four Space Wallpaper Prompts: Stars, Saturn and a Future City

Four #PromptSHARE wallpapers that look up. I shared each prompt word for word and checked it against the image it made, with notes on why it works and what to change.

By The Time Traveler

Where these come from

#PromptSHARE began in 2023 as a daily series of camera-and-lens portrait prompts. By late 2024 it had become mostly phone wallpapers, and I tucked each prompt into its image's alt text. Journal #1 covered the abstract favorites, and Journal #2 turned to the elements. This one leaves the ground behind: the Milky Way, a starry valley, Saturn and a city under a giant planet.

I copied each prompt below exactly as I posted it, and each image shows what that prompt produced.

What makes a space wallpaper work

A night sky makes a natural background, because most of it is dark and quiet. Three habits keep it that way:

  • Let the dark do the work. Deep blue and black skies keep icons and the clock readable, and they look calm on a screen at night.
  • One bright subject. A band of stars, a single planet or one glowing skyline gives the eye a place to land. More than one fights for attention.
  • A horizon to anchor it. Mountains, trees or a skyline along the bottom give the scene scale and leave the sky open for the clock.

1. Milky Way over the mountains

A starry sky over the mountains, with a view of the Milky Way galaxy in full display. The night scene captures an awe-inspiring beauty and mystery that is indescribable in the style of Kantian aesthetics. A panoramic shot emphasizes the vastness of space and the celestial bodies above.

Why it works: "Milky Way galaxy in full display" names one clear subject, and "vastness of space" tells the generator to give most of the frame to sky. The result runs the galaxy straight up the middle, with dark peaks and a band of fog at the bottom. "In the style of Kantian aesthetics" names a mood rather than a painter, which pushes the image toward awe instead of a specific look.

Try changing: "the mountains" to another landscape, such as "a desert canyon" or "a frozen lake." Or swap "awe-inspiring beauty and mystery" for a quieter mood, such as "stillness and calm."

2. Stars over a quiet valley

dark blue night sky stars bright dark blue realistic real photography filming high quality, create an image

Why it works: It reads like a list of keywords, and the repetition does real work. "Dark blue" appears twice, so the palette stays deep and even. "Realistic real photography" pushes it toward a camera look. The generator added the valley and pine trees on its own, which gives the sky a dark, simple base.

Try changing: the color. Replace both "dark blue" phrases with "deep violet" or "midnight teal." To control the ground, add a short subject such as "over a pine forest" or "over the ocean."

3. Saturn in the stars

An artist's rendition of Saturn in the distant past with more extensive, vibrant rings

Why it works: "An artist's rendition" tells the generator it can make the planet beautiful instead of exact. Saturn's warm cream bands stand out against the blue star field, and the planet sits in the middle of the frame, below where a lock screen clock usually goes.

Try changing: the planet. "Jupiter with its storms" or "a blue ice giant" keep the same setup. You can also push the rings further with words like "glowing" or "icy."

4. A city under a giant planet

Futuristic cityscape with a blue sky and planet background vector presentation design, a digital illustration concept of a technology world without people, a futuristic skyline with a light path line in the air, high resolution in the style of technology world without people.

Why it works: It stacks three layers in plain words: a planet in the back, a skyline in the middle and a "light path line" in front. "Without people" appears twice, which keeps the scene clean and empty. "Vector presentation design" holds it to crisp edges and one blue palette.

Try changing: "blue sky" to "violet sky" or "amber sky" to change the mood. If the light streaks feel too busy behind your icons, drop "with a light path line in the air."

Adapting these for a 16:9 desktop

This section is my suggestion. These changes were not part of the original posts.

I made all four for tall phone screens. For a widescreen monitor:

  • Set the ratio. None of these prompts carries parameters, so in Midjourney add --ar 16:9 at the end. If you run a phone version first with --ar 9:20, swap it for --ar 16:9 rather than adding a second flag.
  • Re-plan the layout. A tall sky becomes a wide one. "Panoramic shot" in the Milky Way prompt already suits a wide screen. For Saturn or the city, try "planet on the right, open sky on the left" to leave room for desktop files.
  • Mind the screen edges. Leave room for your screen's top and bottom bars: a dark band of sky at the top and an even horizon at the bottom keep them readable.

FAQ

Why do some of these prompts repeat words? Repeating a word, such as "dark blue" or "without people," tends to give it more weight. Use it for the one idea you care about most.

Do I need to name a real place or planet? No. Named subjects such as Saturn or the Milky Way give the generator a clear target, but a plain description such as "a starry sky over the mountains" works too.
